4 stars Classic prog mixed with a newer sound

After just over two years of listening to progressive music, I have become a much more picky listener. When I first started listening, I was up for anything that was labeled progressive. I loved listening to Train of Thought (Dream Theater) and Paradise Lost (Symphony X) because they were heavy, and had fast guitar parts. I didn't like bands such as Transatlantic or Pink Floyd.

So what happened? Why am I reviewing this CD that sounds almost nothing like Train of Thought?

I realized what prog really was, and realized what I wanted to get out of it. Progressive music should be complex and diverse, but should not be based around playing as fast as humanly possible. There are times for this, but for the most part, progressive music should have soul and meaning to the music. And this is exactly what I find in Shadow Circus.

The album Whispers and Screams is a very solid effort from one of the world's newer progressive rock bands. The highlight is, of course, Project Blue, the 33 minute epic that is based off Stephen King's novel, The Stand. Listening to the whole thing at once is a musical roller coaster. There are intense moments, laid back moments, and of course complex instrumental moments. Everything that I like in a good prog album is here. The vocals are very prog-like, and solid. All the instrumentalists are on the top of their game. I've always liked complex drum beats, even if it is in 4/4 time. This is here, along with awesome guitar, keyboards and the bass!

Overall, this is a very strong album. Anyone who likes progressive music should definitely listen to this album. It has something here for everyone to enjoy!
