3 stars Very pretentious if you want me to be honest. I can understand people being surprised by this album... if you've never listened Gentle Giant in your entire life. There's pretty much nothing that differentiates one Gentle Giant album from the other, they're all the same. I understand that they have a style but that doesn't mean they have to stay in said style doing the same thing over and over again.

Octopus is one of their most praised albums and to be fair it does have some charm to it. It's accompanied by a beautiful album cover and some of its tracks are really good. I specifically enjoyed River. However the whole album is pretty much the Gentle Giant doing overlapped voices over some catchy guitar line. It's very enjoyable and does not drill your ear.

I would never go to the extent of saying it's essential. I could understand it being a masterpiece however. I'm giving it three stars.
