3 stars Manifestations 2002 isn't all that progressive; it's largely straight black metal. However, I think dedicated DO fans will recognize traits in this release that anticipate the amazing band that DO would soon become. Even at this point, Deathspell Omega outclassed much of their competition. The sound quality is really pretty good for raw black metal. You can definitely hear the instrumental skill, even though we aren't given any info about who the musicians are. The shorter song lengths, compared to other band releases, are also a plus. This is a less experimental, far-reaching version of the band that we've come to know. That's why I'm giving it three stars. So, if you're a DO fan like me, or not averse to black metal generally, I think you'll find this an enjoyable alternative to their later albums.
