3 stars Chimeras is quite unusual work, even for John Zorn. This album is a fresh one from New Composers series, and contains modern classic music, or let say - avant-garde segment of it.

There are 13 short pieces on this album (14 - on 2010 re-release), played by chamber sextet ( two reeds, two strings, keyboard, percussion) and classic vocalist on few movements. The music itself is dark, minimalistic, often cold.

All musicians are extra-class, music is complex, minimalistic and hardly accessible though. The listener very soon finds himself in cold dark room , full of his own fears.Whenever this work has no relations with avant-jazz or avant prog, it could be delicious music for modern classic avant-garde lovers.
