5 stars Review #83!

I had no hope for this album. At first listen, I had just put it on because I was bored. I do not like The Soft Machine, so this was especially nice. The album begins with 'Facelift', a live track. A kind of avant-garde jazz feel moves through the song. This is a great example of free-form jazz. Reminiscent of 'Bitches' Brew' at times. This is my favorite song by The Soft Machine. 'Slightly All The Time', another jazzy track, feels a little bit like a Herbie Hancock composition. Another great song from The Soft Machine. 'Moon in June', the only song with lyrics on the album, has some nice percussion and vocals. About halfway though, the music dissolves into more avant-garde jazz. This a Canterbury Scene masterpiece. It is quite necessary because it offers a refresher from the rest of this jazz-driven album. 'Out-Bloody-Rageous' is a kind of ambient jazz song. I keep thinking of Klaus Schulze while listening to it. Anyways, this is a great album for anyone who likes jazz, progressive rock, this band, or for anyone who doesn't like The Soft Machine. Worth it, 100%.
