2 stars Review #105!

I picked up 'Talk' for two dollars on cassette at a local record store, not expecting at all what I heard. The album starts with 'The Calling', which has some of the fakest guitar ever. Jon Anderson sounds like he's been listening to too much Peter Gabriel solo stuff. 'I Am Waiting' sounds so meaningless, like Jon Anderson pulled lines from a hat and used it to make the lyrics of this song. I hate how synthetic the drums sound. This song has a nice middle section, but it is not worth it. There's a weird section where Anderson seems to be imitating Eddie Van Halen. 'Real Love' has a pretty weird intro that I like. The song is chock-full of electronic drums, voicebox vocals, and cheesy lyrics that pretty much had all been used up in the previous decade. This song has its moments but still slightly sucks. But it is still one of the best songs on this album. 'State of Play's beginning sequence just sounds like the background music to a trailer of some random Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. Cheap and dumb. 'Walls' is one of the worst Yes songs ever, with the same dumb song structure almost every other track on this album has. This song hurts so bad! How could such a great band fall this low? 'Where Will You Be' is - well - um? The best way I could describe it is like the demo on my $15 Goodwill Yamaha. It is pretty bad. Like, BAD. And finally, it's 'Endless Dream'. People say this song is just as good as 'Awaken', but this song just does nothing for me. Not interesting, not good, but not bad. The first minute sounds like 'Roundabout' and 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' had a baby. (Ew!) When vocals enter the scene, it gets a bit better, but it's still eh. I like the weird shifting guitar noise section about five minutes in, though. There are about three minutes of junk until the song gets good again, with droning electronic piano and heavy guitar. Nice complicated drumming. I like the 'talk' section. It is decently powerful for something this synthetic and fake. Overall, this album is terrible. But it is not something for only completionists. 'Endless Dream' and 'Real Love' are some good (I guess) songs. Prog on.
