4 stars Much debated album on this site, the reviews go from bad to good to great. There are only 5 songs here on Electric Light Orchestra's second, and best (IMHO) album. This album shows them at their most classical/proggiest. Jeff Lynne goes it alone without Roy Wood, and suceeds with an effort I find better than NO ANSWER, which got boring in parts. Here, I am never bored. This is NOT a perfect album, though- I wish the sound quality was sharper, especially on the opening number "In Old England Town". And, of course, we have here the masterpiece of classical music fusing with rock in "Roll Over Beethoven", which is a seminal song in rock music. Because of the poor sound at times, I can only give 4 stars for ELO II, and wish I could give 4 1/2 or 5. Excellent addition to any prog collection.
