5 stars Review #145!

The Residents' most anti-music album. The best (as well as most absurd, and frankly, most Resident-y) way to put it is that this album is the same way that the crinkling of a dry sponge is music: it just isn't. But I love it all the same. This little recording is like a sound fx compilation gone rogue. A series of chanting, occasional tribal percussion, constant heavy wind, and an even heavier concept. Picture this. A band did some research on the Eskimos, and did an album that represents them in an unbiased, culturally sensitive, and inoffensive way by making it just sound effects. Now imagine that sounding good. That's this here album, my friend. And this is not just good; it's amazing. And there are a few special and distinct reasons as to why I find it so. One: It's ambience with a tribal feel, and I'm a sucker for stuff like that. Two: It's The Residents. I've loved them for as long as I've known them. Three: It feels real. This album. The concept, the music, the detailed nuance. It all feels not only like real tribal chanting, and a factual concept, and all the more wonderful things this record contains, but it feels like The Residentsreally did their research. They read the folktales, they learned their way of life, they studied their rituals, and most importantly, they learned who they are, as well as their history. This album proves very thoughtful, loving, and honest. And what have the Residents ever been but that? (Ha!) Prog on!
