4 stars Review #163!

The Residents were known for going all-out on concepts that ended up never completed (i.e. The Mole Trilogy, The American Composers Series), and some that weren't all that great. But one that was great, ambitious, and certainly complete was 'The Commercial Album'. Made to upset critics and record labels who complained about their long tracks, this album has 40 songs, each one minute long, meant to imitate the top 40 billboard charts. The result is a bombardment of catchy, yet often dark tracks that showcase The Residents talent of songwriting in a way that not many of their albums do. Some standout tracks include 'Loneliness', 'Nice Old Man', and 'Amber'. But, it's not just tracks like these that are great. The whole album is! Check it out if you can. Prog on!
