5 stars BunChakeze' "Whose Dream?", recorded in the 1980s but never released at the time, was a lost gem - although no more!

The reward of complexity in music is that it reveals itself over successive listens. Simple music may hit you immediately with a 'like it or not' impression, but complex music is more ambiguous, and this is where this album shines.

Even on first listen however, there is much to enjoy. The guitar work is stellar. If you enjoy the kind of classic guitar sounds pioneered in the 70s, you'll delight in Colin Tench's 12-string electric textures, soaring Gilmouresque leads, Al DiMeloa-inspired, muted string runs and unusual chordal passages.

Joey Lugassy's voice has the power and authority to carry the import of the lyrics, while still embodying sensitivity. His vocal lines are sinuous and eschew the predictable melodic direction, yet his tunes get into your head in a way that will have you humming them for days.

The bass playing is intricate and supportive, with Gary Derrick doing a lot more than is at first apparent. Cliff Deighton on drums does what a drummer should; hold it all together. Considering the twists and turns in the music, his style nicely balances the off-beats that need accent, with a powerful, straight ahead approach that unifies the music.

It is easy to pick holes in any music, and I'm sure even the musicians themselves would find things they wished they'd been able to do better at the time. But overall this is an ambitious collection of music that succeeds wonderfully.

It is full of personal integrity - no conforming to fashions of the day here. What made it commercially unpalatable in the days of corporate music, make it an independently-produced album that so many music fans will delight in now.

Go Bun!
