3 stars This album is an attempt to say that SB are still alive and kicking. They represent one of the big names in current Symphonic Prog, so they deserve our attention.

Yes,'V' represents their finest hour, but everything disappears into an SB sameness. I don't understand why people rave about 'Snow' for example, but then maybe it's because I don't listen to the words...

Anyway, intial listenings were promising as the band seemed to try new things on the grand scale. Unfortunately though, the pace and sameness took over once more.

I guess it's not reflective enough for my ears. There are obviously moments of depth and delicacy, but not enough before the familiar sound and pace take over again.

It's like SB are scared to suspend the momentum and descend us into a world of darkness and neon light. Trouble is, it's exactly these bits that make albums like 'The lamb' or 'Brave' work so well (in my view). Why do I choose these albums to compare it with? I just feel that the variety on offer create simularities.

The last song (Jaws of Heaven) is really not that far off from being a classic... but for me, it doesn't quite get there. It could be a production issue. After all, the ending of the album, which should be on the very grandest of scales, seems to be happening at less volume than the actual intro to the album! i don't know what it is. It's a really good song, but not quite great.

After early listenings I was really hoping it would attain 4 stars, but eventually I feel that it drifted into 3.

Musicianship is excellent throughout, and I would say It's definately worth a listen.
