3 stars A to the point review.

They don't make em/we don't have bands like this anymore. The freedom that came with the late 60's/early70's musical scene meant nearly anything would be given a chance...usually on off beat small labels and the odd support slot at the Marquee...but a chance is a chance!

I don't have the first album so unsure if/how their sound and approach developed/changed. Comparison time is very much more If than Colosseum and the later Jazz Q from Czech Republic. The one and done Walrus would be on the same rather crowded stage too. It isn't Blood/Sweat/Tears horn rock but it isn't full on fusion either. It even opens the door to some acid folkier influences which is brave/interesting with Ask For Nothing showing off some Clem Alford style east meets west sitar heroics. We might call it typical of the times but it was a fairly small seam they were mining. The Blue Note era jazzer in me finds some of the horn arrangements a bit clunky and uninspiring ...but they were meant to add to the approach Galliard were taking and not be some cool '59 New York jazz club combo.

I guess there were not enough ten man and gear sized transit vans available to keep this viable but this album was worthy of the times and sub sub genre!

Yet again I would give it a 3.5, it isn't quite what a 4 demands but a 3 will lower the average rating.
