4 stars Welcome to the Planet Gong.

This album was issue by Virgin in around 1974, original issue was by BYG in France.

Virgin signed GONG to the label but they had no new product for release. So Virgin issued this album for the price of a single.

At the time I was only 13/14 and listening to Slade/Mott/Queen etc. I'd never heard of GONG, but I thought what the hell there must be at least one good track on it. First listen left me disappointed as it was so radically different to the pop music I was listening to.

However, I played it a few more times and grew to love it. This was the turning point for me that led me into the wonderful world of Progressive Rock. Without this album I don't know hwat I would be listening to nowadays, if anything.

The bad news for Virgin was that although this sold in large quantities the BRMB? banned it from the album charts as it was too cheap to be classed as an album and couldn't put it in the singles chart as it was an album. Just imagine what may have happened if it had been allowed to chart....

Cheese please
