3 stars For those who want an introduction to the early works of MALICORNE, this compliation will be a good choice. Each of the four previously released albums is represented by two or three songs, and even those who are already familiar with "Malicorne 1 / 2", "Almanach" etc. might be interested in "Quintessence" because of the first track "Martin", which is not to be found on any of those other albums. Tracks 2-11 are well chosen and illustrate the kind of "revised traditional French folklore" as performed by MALICORNE at that time. Track no. 1 has more electrified arrangements with percussion and electric guitars and violins, thus reminds much more of a STEELEYE SPAN migrated to Brittany than the other songs. Fans of STEELEYE SPAN and FAIRPORT CONVENTION will really enjoy this. All in all, "Quintessence" is a recommendable acquirement for every CD collector.
