5 stars As a musician wandering aimlessly away in the suppossed melting pot of artistry in Southern California (B.S.) and one who still strongly longs for the day when artistic ideas are once again encouraged and supported by way of collectively assembling and letting it flow improvisationally rather than by way of an egotistic dictatorship and the almighty mold of the RIAA searching for mindless process contol of a marketable diva or sampling borrowed times, this album is a true testament of brilliance erupting from years of the individual forces branching into different musical territories and then joining forces. The final result may be chaotic but upon first listening we all become aware that this was in fact a rehearsal session. Francis Vincent Zappa would be proud. If the industry had their way, they would not have let this out of the vaults in todays times, so we should thank Mr. Fripp of his decision to take matter into his own hands. More power to him for releasing live shows from 35+ years of brilliant music made on the spot. If you do not understand Polyrhythms, the concept and required concentration of orchestrating 6 or how many musicians to play different parts of a bar or note instead of walking on each other is no laughing matter and I have yet to hear this being carried on in todays music. For this reason alone, the Double Trio remains unparalleled and unsurpassed. Various Jazz legends and Mr. Zappa demonstrated this time and time again, (but not in the realm of improvisational chaos) and the Bruford Muir era was an indication of using rhythmic patterns creating a separate instrument as well much like the Allman Bros and Grateful Dead. This is a musicians opinion. The more unmainstream the better.
