3 stars Crown of Creation ? 1968 (3.2/5) 11 ? Best Song: In Time?

Jefferson Airplane goes from acid pop to acid blues and now it's acid folk rock. Which means that Grace Slick has gone from Smart singer to Janis rip-off to hippie prophet? Isn't evolution a truly amazing spectacle when it's documented? For all their faults, the band, at least in 1968, could stir up an atmosphere of foreboding and woe. It's as if they, like, saw the end of the world, man. They saw what was going to happen before it happened. They totally predicted the assassination of John Lennon in 'In Time'. Just listen to the lyrics.

Okay, so that's a load of rubbish, what's the music like? Well, it's slow, very soft, very laid-back and quaint. They go for that 'let's make the verses soft and alluring-like, then get real loud on the chorus'. The also have some nice guitar solos that are still derivative and based entirely on overdistorted feedback. How can you argue with such an impending mood, though? As it stands, I typically prefer the na´ve prophet to the pretentious experimentative jokester, and this is no exception. I wholly recommend Crown of Creation over Baxters, but not because Crown is amazing. It's way too repetitive and one-key to capture my interests. It has some of the finest Slick crooning for miles, though. It's a fan must-have, but keep your grubby paws off my clothes.
