4 stars This is a very special album for Dream Theater. As other reviewers said, Dream Theater was being yanked around by the record company, forced to record a song co-written by Desmond Child, and not allowed to make a double disc album which would have included Metropolis pt.2 (the song).

With all of that in mind, somehow Dream Theater managed to write a beautiful album. This is easily DT's least heavy album but I do think that when they were forced to tighten up the song writing, it was an improvement and made them much more accessible. I mean if you told someone that this was a commercial album, yet the first track is over 8 minutes long, it contains an instrumental and then two songs over 12 minutes long, some people would think you were nuts.

There are some real gems contained in this album. You listen to songs like Hell's Kitchen, Lines in the Sand and Trial of Tears and they are extra special if you are aware of all the turmoil and self destruction going on with the band.

This is by far the most underrated Dream Theater album. The more mainstream sound turns away some, but trust me, it's still a prog album and should get every chance to be appreciated for the actual music on the album.
