4 stars A newish Italian band with a very modern sound.

Listed under the RPI genre, this normally means a band who play hommage to the old masters of RPI. Mad Crayon does not follow that recipe though. Their sound is mix of fusion, metal, modern rock, funk and symph prog. OK, with some RPI influences too, but they are not in this mould at all. Well, not on this album at least.

The sound is excellent and based on guitars. Both chugging metal riffs in the vein of Dream Theater, a lot of jazz riffs and more melodic guitars. The other main instrument is tangents. Both with a more contemporary tangents sound and some Hammond like organs. The bass and the drums patterns are also very well thought through and very good. The vocals too is very good.

This makes a very varied album with a lot of really good songs. The only missing ingredient is a truly great song. But I feel this album is growing on me, day by day. Mad Crayon most definate has something going on here. I am not sure if this is a good or a great album. But I guess the longviety of this album will keep me entertained for decades to come and I therefore upgrades it just to save me time and efforts to edit this review on a later date. This album also only have one rating from before and I would also recommend the RPI stalwarts to check out this album. They are currently missing out on something great if they ignore Preda.
