4 stars Endless avant-garde boogie jamsessions, psydelic folk and weird lyrics sang by the captain of craziness: welcome to mirror man of Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band.

Tarrotplane is an avant-garde boogie jamsession which clocks in with 19 minutes. The boogie structure isn't that strange at all. This recording could have been made by Canned Heat if there weren't no avant-garde saxophone and mouth harmonica solo's in it and the strange voice of the captain! If this record is a live session; I quess not, but if it's a jam session: yes for sure. And it's actually very good. Maybe a bit too long, but if I'm in the right mood I'd liked it never stopped. The magic band is playing really tight.

Kandy Korn is a psychedelic folk song, with some great guitar parts. Really psychedelic! The singing is a bit false and the recording is not so good. But still a good song. Maybe the false singing was intended!

The second side contains more boogierock. If you'd like it I really recommend Canned Heat's Living the Blues record, which was recorded in the same year (1968) and also contains some psychedelic parts.

This record deserves 4+ stars! It is much more accessible than the Trout Mask Replica and Lick my Decalls of record and may be a good start for getting into Captain Beefheart.
