3 stars John Zorn: Alhambra Love Songs [2009]

Rating: 6/10

John Zorn seems to have become increasingly comfortable with his more melodic side over the past two or three years. Zorn is best known for his absolutely searing avant-garde jazz; his music is not particularly renowned for being easy on the ears. However, many of his recent albums have taken a decidedly more conventional approach. Alhambra Love Songs is a perfect example. This album is a collection of 1950s-style melodic jazz pieces for piano, bass, and percussion (similar to Vince Guaraldi). Most of these tracks would not be out of place in the 'Easy Listening' section. As somebody who is relatively well-acquainted with Zorn's music, this album shocked me because it didn't shock me. One could play this at a cocktail party without receiving a single look askance.

There isn't much to say about this album, to be honest. It's a solid release with amazing musicianship and a pleasant atmosphere. However, there is little variety to found throughout the course of these 11 tracks. I can't imagine anybody taking offense at music like this, but this doesn't mean that it's particularly exciting or compelling. Zorn manages to create something here that is completely disparate from his normal style, and he does it well, to boot. Regardless, this is a shallow release. Alhambra Love Songs is a perfect album for background music; unfortunately, I prefer music with more depth. I can lightly recommend this, but it needs to be taken for what it is.
