4 stars As far as pop albums go, this isn't good, probably because its not really pop. As far as prog. albums go, well, its just not prog. What can I say about this album? For some retarded reason I love it. Everyone likes to talk about how it just isn't true to the Gentle Giant way, and I could actually care less. Be loyal to your ears, not an ideal. Music is music, you listen, you like, maybe you don't. I wouldn't want to stand as judge on what makes music truly good until I've heard all songs (yes I know the is outlandishly absurd). Don't be afraid, you can like Gentle Giant on Three Friends and still like them on Free Hand and even farther still like them on Giant for a Day. Go on, don't be stubborn. Go and enjoy pop-ish music, there is a reason that the beats are enjoyed by so many, whether for the right intention or not. The more you broaden your listening spectrum, the more you will be able to identify what qualities about different styles make the music enjoyable. And isn't that what music is for? Enjoyment? Maybe this album is how Gentle Giant wanted to express themselves at the time. Perhaps they were listening to some Simon & Garfunkel and decided they liked it, and then did something weird with it... like "Friends".

If I could say something intelligent, you can at least distinguish the kind of accuracy that Gentle Giant was dedicated to. I've heard someone say it well (not direct quote), that if you were to play these songs in any way different than Gentle Giant meticulously did, they would be impossible to improve upon.

I really dig that "Little Brown Bag" song. They threw in a simple honkey tonk piano in the background mixed in with the simple rock-a-beat. Just what you would imagine in your 'giants' of Gentle Giant nightmares.
