3 stars Ulver's Shadows of the Sun is a slower and more sedate album than the neurotic and twitchy Blood Inside, and personally I can't help but think it's a bit of a step down for the band. I can't imagine why they chose to include a rather dull and lifeless cover of Black Sabbath's Solitude on the album (never one of Sabbath's better tracks), unless it was a simple matter of just not having enough good material to fill out the album. Certainly, the compositions here, whilst effective in a melancholy and minimalistic way, lack the distinctive richness that made Ulver's electronic post-rock phase so intriguing.
