3 stars Baltimore-based dark Prog/Fusion band of the new millenium, led by guitarist Joseph Walker. The other original members were bassist Mike Galway and drummer Patrick Gaffney. The band recorded a short-EP in 2002 at the famous Orion Studios, eventually released under the title ''Dark matter'' the same year.

While Cerebus Effect's style would fully develop over the years, this early stage of the band finds the trio performing a very dynamic, often disharmonic and highly technical Prog/Fusion with complex breaks and a very haunting atmosphere. The sound is heavily influenced by KING CRIMSON with strong references to the music of ALAN HOLDSWORTH, DJAM KARET and RUSH.But the closest reference seems to be early-90's SIEGES EVEN, as CEREBUS EFFECT recall heavily the technical yet more rockier side of the German metallers. Some powerful rhythms are followed by impressive breaks, Fusion-esque guitar solos and captivating virtuosic parts with deep and complex bass lines and frenetic still very solid drumming. There is also a strong sense of improvisation throughout the release, which is nicely performed and rarely boring.Obviously the albums lack any kind of flexibility, but it is certain that the listener will find himself hooked by the tons of changing moods and themes in this EP, which is a pretty nice lesson for anyone eager to meet very technical Fusion musicianship.

Be sure you will be in the right mood when putting this CD in your device.Prepare to meet a trio with a lust to deliver some very cold-blooded, dark but very adventurous and inspired Prog/Fusion of good quality.Warmly recommended.
