3 stars Listening diary 29th August, 2021: Leap Day - Awaking the Muse (neo-prog, 2009)

An obscurity leftover from the years where I used to be obsessed with neo-prog, this is probably one of the better of the newer bands, but still suffers from so many of the genre's shortcomings. The big difference between the haves and the have nots in neo-prog is how much they embrace the pop - Marillion and IQ after all were as influenced by 80s pop as they were 70s prog. Leap Day have some hooks here for sure, and they're enough to keep the album above par for me, but the lengthy instrumental pomps and the utterly banal production threaten it frequently.
