3 stars Listening diary 24th August, 2021: Sieges Even - The Art of Navigating By the Stars (progressive rock/metal, 2005)

Considering all the acclaim this used to get back in the day, it's a fairly unremarkable slab of vanilla prog metal, and revisiting it many years after my last listen proves my thoughts have never really changed on it. That's not to say it's without merit - it's very well played and produced, and occasionally some pretty nice melodies crop up, particularly in the finale. But all the parts that I enjoy are in more of an AOR 80s pop rock kind of way than a prog metal way. The melodies definitely have that arena rock aura to them which can be partway between tacky and anthemic, but that's really all it's got going for it.

5.5 (4th listen)
