4 stars Perhaps it's the comparatively long break between studio albums between this one and The Sum of No Evil which made the prog scene go ga-ga for The Banks of Eden, because to my ears it didn't seem like there was much new under the sun on early listens. On revisiting it, I find I like it somewhat more - I wouldn't put it on the top tier of their releases, but it does seem like spending a few years on hiatus did them good. As on The Sum of No Evil, there was a bit more musical cohesion than on some of their more sprawling works, and keeping the running time to a bit over 50 minutes is a welcome change from their former approach which often risked prizing quantity over quality.

Musically, they dial back on the Yes influences and dial up the Pink Floyd a bit more compared with Sum of No Evil, and the vocals are still not amazing, but otherwise it's an entirely competent and capable album with a positive, relaxing air that is rather charming.
