4 stars This is not a rehash of the 70's Mahavishnu Orchestra. It is a completely different band. Just like King Crimson of the 80's was completely different from KC of the 70's, this is similar in regard to the difference in sound of the two bands. This new group is built around guitar and sax with a much stronger jazz influence. The compositions are beautiful, the soloing superb. BUT, if you are expecting 70's fusion, DO NOT buy this album. If you can keep an open mind and appreciate the music as individual from anything else, I believe you will be pleasently surprised. Radio-Activity is a fast paced funk fusion with excellent shredding from John and Bill. Nostalgia is a sweet and tender piece with emotion flowing from every note. Billy Cobham really shines on this cd more in his restraint then anything else. Always just the right amount of playing, never stepping on the piece, but allowing it to develop as he contributes. Nightriders is a straight groove with John going nuts showing he can play ROCK guitar as well as anyone, though not my favorite piece on this album. The Bill Evans composition East Side, West Side is a great cut. Jonas cuts loose on this one and shows why John choose him for this album. Great soloing, awesome pocket drumming from Billy (actually controlled chaos), and Mr Evans doesn't disappoint. Clarendon Hills is another emotion filled song, with a great second half. Every note Evans plays, for me, is perfect. Pacific Express is straight jazz. Not a fusion thing, not a rock thing. Jonas once again shines on his solo!! After listening to this album again, for the 250th time, I can see where a 70's fusion fan would be very disappointed, but don't let that dissuade you from this excellent addition to ANY fan of John McLaughlin. When Blue Turns Gold shows John's love for eastern music style. So...if you want a Pt. II to Inner Mounting Flame...THIS ISN'T IT!!! But if you want a solid, beautiful, talent filled album from some of the best names in jazz fusion this is a keeper!
