AND EVERY BLOSSOM

At first listen, this might seem like a bit of a diversion in terms of echolyn's musical direction. But it's not really that far removed from many of the folkier/mellower moments from the band's first two or three LPs. That said, a listener who was not familiar with the band, if hearing this first, probably wouldn't really associate them with "progressive" rock, as many of the forms are closer to conventional folk and jazz.

There is an overall joyful feeling that pervades throughout, richly portrayed primarily with pianos, acoustic guitars, and fretless bass, and occasionally augmented by strings and brass. Whatever these guys were on at the time, I want to get me some of that! Nevertheless, just when you thought they might be getting soft, there are a number of moody moments injected into the songs that keep things interesting, particularly in what I would consider the strongest and most echolyn-sounding track, "Ballet for a Marsh."

This is about as "sunny afternoon" as you're going to get from this band.
