2 stars Iron Maiden's second album, the first one with Adrian Smith. The sound quality has improved, but the songs sound less original than the ones on their debut album.

The album opens with a short instrumental "The Ides Of March" and a great rocker "Wrathchild". More fast paced metal follows with "Murders In The Rue Morgue" and "Another Life", two weak tracks. "Genghis Khan" is a nice instrumental, but nothing very original here... it's very reminiscent of "Transylvania" on their first album. "Innocent Exile" is another average metal song. "Killers" is probably the most progressive song here, and hints at what would be Maiden's song in the following albums. "Prodigal Son" is a cool mid paced song with a ballad-like guitar solo in the middle. "Purgatory" is very fast metal - see "Sanctuary" on the previous album. "Drifter" closes the album with an anthemic song... but again it sounds too much like "Running Free", although I would consider this song to be much better than "Running Free", probably because it's much more complex.

Rating: 65/100 (2 1/2 stars)
