4 stars PLAY IT LOUD!

Never really liked the Emerson,Lake and Powell album so I'm quite surprised how good this is. Cozy Powell (RIP) briefly replaced Palmer in the eighties incarnation of ELP but was always going to struggle to make the drum stool his own.Palmer after all was one of the best drummers in the seventies rock scene. Powell was without question a great heavy rock drummer but you would not expect symphonic prog to be his forte. I have to doff my hat to him here though as he defies my expectations. The live versions of Pirates and Fanfare For The Comman Man more than stand their ground against any other live versions I've heard while as a great bonus there is the wonderfull Mars The Bringer Of War in all its majestic pompous glory. Cozy gets to play with his own drum synthesisers and its way more fun than Carl's on Toccata. I must admit I skipped Knife Edge, From The Beginning and Lucky Man altogether so I can't say much about them but there are improved versions of The Score and Touch and Go from the ELPowell album which gives you around a healthy 55 minutes of head banging full on symphonic prog to enjoy.
