2 stars Better than most Mother gong records "we who were raging "is pretty exciting. The great thing about this line up is the inclusion of Robert Calvert on Sax's this ex-Caterpillar player is the only Sax player other than "bloom" Malherbe. who has the feel to work in this sometimes interesting band. Gilli's vocal range from the beautiful space-whisper she did so well with gong to utter irritating an pretentious poetry inspired hippydom. Always pretty good live Mother Gong never really seemed able to transfer their music to record. Thijs set is live and that really is were this band is most comfortable. This an her first solo album "Mother" are probably the high spot of her (Gilli's) output. Unless you are super keen on Gong derivatives this album is unlikely to convert you. It is however worth buying if only for the truly extraordinary Calvert's contribution. the Material is pretty patchy and you may find that Gilli gets to intense for you as I do. One for the collectors for certain but this is unlikely to convert anyone. Robert Calvert remains one of the real hidden gems of acid/jazz and his presence certainly saves the day here. The sound is pretty decent as well although at times Calvert could be further forward in the mix.
