2 stars Genesis is my favorite band (70-77 era), I love Grand piano and I own some wonderful albums from Yehudi Menuhin so I couldn't resist the temptation to buy this DVD for 6 euros when I was visiting a small market. The string quartet consists of two violins, a viola and a cello, accompanied by a Grand piano player (on a Yamaha). I have to admit that I quickly came to the conclusion that this musical project fails to generate excitement although it sounds wonderful and I also have the idea that everybody plays inspired. But the strong point in Genesis their music is the tension between the acoustic - and the electric side: the parts with the twanging 12-string acoustic guitars, flute and warm vocals and the parts with the harder-edged electric guitar work, powerful organ, sumptuous Mellotron waves and expressive vocals. For example, Musical Box goes on and on without tension or climax, Supper's Ready has only a mellow climate and One For The Vine is just a beautiful song without that sensational break. I am also disappointed by the pictures that are intend to embellish the music but I miss any sense, for example Musical Box without a picture featuring Peter Gabriel and the old man mask .. incredible! So what's next: Jimi Hendrix played on flute - and violin Mellotron or Black Sabbath for harpsichord ...?
