5 stars A resurrection of psychedelism?

Almost Invisible captures extracts from two of SUBARACHNOID SPACE's 1996 performances. Tracks 1-4 were recorded live at the Ptomaine Temple in Oakland CA and are played consecutively as one long continuous piece, whereas Tracks 5-6 were recorded one month earlier from a show at Spaceland in Los Angeles and also run together as a single tune. Terrifying, mysterious, noisy and of course psychedelic, the album re-discovers the spirit of prime raw improvised space rock, in the vein of PINK FLOYD's Ummagumma Live, among others, on a very dark side.

The record opens with "Shut Inside", immediately setting an icy ambiance with its slow tormented guitar sounds. Behind this organised chaos appears sometimes inspired musical lines. Part two of the tune, "Hidden Outside", is much more calm and sounds often oriental with the bass playing, preparing the angriness and the sonic deflagrations of "Floating Above the Skyline", the noisiest part of the song, which finishes slightly, mystically and finally energically with "Below any Border". Mindblowing! A true trip into your deepest fears ! The other live song featured here is (a bit) less dark and more spacey, but nonetheless very strange and original. Beginning with "Outlined in Rust", some passages remind some early moments of HAWKWIND. Rhythm changes in "Calm Fever" to create reverb and hypnotic effects revealing unknown soundscapes.

With "Almost Invisible", SUBARACHNOID SPACE show their powerful live energy, inspiration and talents. Cold, angry, tortured and spacey, the music is unique and terrifying, miles away from other acts of the genre. Strongly recommended!

4 stars This is music to blow your mind with! Everyone should own a CD or two by The Subarachnoid Spacemen. Fans of The Ozric Tentacles, Ash Ra Temple, Agitation Free and my fav Amon Düül II will simply love this album. Almost Invisible is my second album that i picked up by these outer wordly musicians and the album still has me out in some far reaching nebula in search of Earth. The Subarachnoid Space blend heavy space keyboard vibes with intoxicating space guitars and wild bass lines over a flood of drums. The end result is a pure cosmological exploration to which there is no finale. Not sure I would play this at your next dinner party but might make a perfect wedding album !!! As Sun Ra once said "Space is the Place". Need sum space...go gettun.
