PEZ

The bio from the band published on PA (and which comes from the band's website) describes this album as such: "The music changed again, this time it was a fast and heavy style of the trio that approached punk rock songs in an elaborate manner". The only thing I could not find while listening to this album was the "elaborate manner".

Punk it is for sure. The opener which lasts for 90 seconds (another characteristics) shows lots of influence from the Australian punk-rock band "The Saints". Same heavy-speedy- punk but less catchy (don't expect anything à la "Stranded". They'll do even better with "Fútbol?" which clocks at 60 seconds!

Most songs share the same format. And even if "Ya Nadie Lee En Estos Días" (a premonition which means: nobody is reading nowadays) offers some more variety, the global feeling is still very much of the same.

If they would have released such an album twenty years earlier, one might have found this alright probably. But a post-punk Argentinean rock album in the late nineties: is it relevant? What's more: is it relevant on PA???

It is only my third review from the band and so far I could only listen to pure heavy metal and punk rock. But to be honest, when I want to listen to some punkish tunes I prefer the likes of "The Clash", "The Damned", "Generation X", "The Adverts" or the Pistols. But I don't expect to review their albums on such a site.

The epic from this album is "Miedo" (fear). Almost five minutes of heavy noises; which means that the other fourteen tracks available are good for half an hour. Damned elaborate?

In terms of prog, it is a very thin work. Maybe some vague Crimsonian guitar during "Siesta". It should be considered as the best track: it offers some fine vocals as well as a good guitar break.

In terms of rating: two stars for a punk album (and even there I'm generous). Close to nothing in terms of prog music.

The third album from Pez and the band returns to a simplified punk based style.

Punk is not the correct label on the music Pez delivers here. Yes, it is simple, primitive aggressive music. But it very much fits the heavy metal segment. Heavy metal light though because it is obvious Pez tries to go down the power pop route here. The likes of Blink 182 has dominated this segment so far.

The sound on this album is excellent and the musicians is also doing a great job. The music on this album is simple and will be shunned as in hopeless and the opposite of progressive rock. Which it is. But it is not Christmas turkey material, this album. The band knows how to play and there are some pretty intricate structures here too. The vocals is pretty bad though as they were on the first Pez albums. The lack of any good songs is also a major problem here. But this album is still not a flippy flappy flaming turkey though. It is actually a decent album. And it is also a free download album. Not so bad deal after all.
