3 stars The single Devil's Answer was unreleased on album during the 70s but has found a place as a bonus track on the third Rooster album "In Hearing Of". It is definitely one of the big singles from the album in 1971 and quintessential Rooster.

The single had very dark lyrics as was a Rooster trademark, "People are looking but they don't know what to do, It's the time of the season for the people like you, Come back tomorrow, show the scars on your face, It's a clue to the answer we all chase..." The single features one of the best instrumental breaks with Vincent Crane's shimmering Hammond that stabs along with menace complimented by a killer guitar riff.

"Three, five and seven lift the heaviest load, reach the top of the heaven that's fallen below, Devil may care but you wish for the best, Can't you see there's an answer that lies there...", If you can understand what they are on about you will probably see that it really is a dark psychedelic excursion into a world of memorable riffs and doomy lyrics; the nature of the themes are always grim and bleak to echo the sentiments of the death of flower power, and user in the birth of darker musical territory that AR were never afraid to delve in.

The B Side is The Rock, a 4 and a half minute instrumental that gives Crane a chance to crank it up loud and hard and the guitars are quite angular with an odd time sig as sprinkling on the prog cake.

Both tracks are featured on the remastered "In Hearing Of" and that album is worth having as one of the best AR works, however as I always say vinyl singles are as rare as snake's feet so if you see this single, you would be well advised to snap it up.
