3 stars The early to mid 1990s was one of the most exciting moments in contemporary music, completely dismissed by many in the equally exciting prog movement of the late 1960s to mid 1970s. Artists discovered a new art form, new instrumentation and created a community that, just like the prog community twenty years before (and particularly the Canterbury scene), leaned to the left, sharing politics, music and even band members with each other. Moreover, they were less creatively precious than any movement before them, allowing and encouraging other artists to remix their material. In this period is was not uncommon for seminal songs to be remixed a dozen or more times. This really was a time of great fecundity.

So it is no surprise that the giants of the progressive electronic world got their hands on BJORK's 'Debut' album and produced a series of remixes, gathered together on this cumbersomely titled release. It kicks off with a remix of 'Human Behaviour' by UNDERWORLD, to my mind a band that truly ought to be here in their own right. This remix is nowhere near their best work but is still an interesting example of a rhythm-driven techno track. BLACK DOG, another of the most important bands in the IDM movement, provide two interesting and definitely progressive remixes. But it is the final remix that lights up this small collection: the near ten-minute 'Springs Eternal' mix features a gossamer tune and the most ethereal vocals BJORK can produce. This is a work of art akin to a glass sculpture, fragile, transparent and icily beautiful, and would fit right in to any progressive album you care to name. One of those tracks that demands your attention every time you hear it, a true five-star track and worth the effort to track it down. Darn near the best thing BJORK has ever done.
