INFINITY BEYOND

It surprised me that on this site, with all of the Dream Theater fans around, this band could go unnoticed. With a classic prog lineup of vocalist, guitar, keyboards, bass and drums (big deal, there are thousands of bands like this), this Acid Rain (there are three different bands with that name here) manages to have a sound remarkably similar to DT, but with their own style as well.

Firmly rooted in metal, Acid Rain has the musical chops to play a similar prog metal style to Dream Theater, with blazing guitar and keyboards over thundering drums and bass. The songs are very good, a few of them great. And it helps that Miguel Cacheiro's voice doesn't have that shrillness of, ahem, you-know-who.

They save the best for last. St. Vitus' Dance, a twelve minute instrumental is a mind blowing work of power and beauty.

It would be nice to find out what these guys are doing these days.

Acid Rain is an obscure progressive metal band from Madrid - Spain born in 1999 and having only one album issued in 2003 named Infinity beyond self released by the band. I think they disbanded a couple of years later and gone into oblivion. Well what we have here? - a fairly decent album , with mediocre vocals but quite awesome in places instrumental passages. Imagine something a la Dream Theater in overall sound, they are not original at all, but offers some respectable pieces, plus even a cover of famous norwegian prog metal Conception - Cardinal sin is the piece from their album Flow from 1997. Best pieces are Fear inside, Blackout and St. Vitus' Dance, a twelve minute instrumental ,a superbe work of power and complexity. all 3 tracks are excellent prog metal tunes that show potential, is a pity that the rest while are ok are far from very intresting or excellent, but these two pieces are almost perfect, very strong musicnsgip, riffs and keyboard solos are very well performed, the later one being an instrumental tune.. As I said the vocal parts are pretty terrible , mediocre and without any intresting parts, the lowest part of the album. All in all Infinity beyond is decent, good in places nothing really more. 3 stars
