3 stars PIKE 28 - FEATHERS is the 58TH solo studio album by BUCKETHEAD

It is the 18TH album released in 2013

It contains SEVEN tracks

It clocks in at 31:39

BUCKETHEAD plays all the instruments

Dan Monti and Albert once again handle the production aspects

"Feathers" (2:48) starts things out with a rather generic alternative grungy metal thang. although it has scorching solos never really deviates from the predictable. meh

"Claw Station (2:13) is another heavy alternative metal track but has some electronic smoothing-out-the-warts type of effects going on. There are also some interesting solo guitar insertions into the mix

"Mill (5:13) is another average alternative metal track with nothing exciting :(

"Faded (6:32) is yet another alternative metal track with nothing interesting happening. Yet another alternative metal track by the numbers

"Cactus Spines (4:45) starts out very mellow and has a rather ambient feel with single keyboard notes. Actually it continues this way. It is a very slowed down jazz guitar shtick much like Django Rheinhardt on valium. It never deviates from molasses mode and creates a very downer mood

"Lake Whisperer (3:36) picks things up a bit and creates a rather accessible funk number. It varies in speed but keeps a uniform mood. The keyboards are very 70s and i the bass fuzz is quite pleasant. It actually sounds like variations on previous BH albums. This one is nice

"Rooster Row (6:32) takes things into a totally new arena by starting out with a firecracker supply of electronic effects and a totally ripping guitar solo wankfest. The emphasis on this one is to blend the hyperactive guitar solos with electronic effects. The drums are fairly mid-tempo most of the time despite the guitars being totally freaking out totally. I like this one. Very cool

Overall this one is quite pleasant but not the cream of the crop. Pleasantry doesn't make excellence. All the ideas presented here have been done much better in the PIKE series but this is a nice pleasant album if you simply can't get enough of these things
