3 stars The first three? Well almost

"Collector's edition" is a somewhat misleading title in fact, as there is nothing rare or collectable here whatsoever. What we do have is a budget priced way of obtaining two of Oldfield's first three albums in their original (CD) packaging, plus the "Orchestral" version of his first ("Tubular Bells"). The three CDs are held together by a cardboard sleeve, but apart from that, the individual CDs are indistinguishable from the separate releases of each.

Thus there are no bonus tracks, each CD running for the original LP length of around 40 minutes.

The two Oldfield albums are of course classics, and among the finest Oldfield made during his long career. "Hergest ridge" has its wonderful wall of sound second side, and "Ommadawn" saw Oldfield maturing rapidly as a composer. It is disappointing though that Oldfield's classic first album is replaced here with the nondescript orchestral version, instead of being the essential original.

This really is a case of buyer beware, make sure you don't see the words "Tubular bells" and assume this is the first three albums in one package.

If you have the original albums already, there is no point whatsoever in acquiring this set. For those who have yet to have the pleasure of discovering Mike Oldfield, this is a cost effective way to start.
