Uboa biography
Uboa is the pseudonym of experimental metal and noise musician Xandra Metcalfe from Melbourne, Australia. Since 2010, Metcalfe has independently produced and released four full-length solo albums under the Uboa moniker in addition to several EPs and collaborations, and over the course of her career has transitioned from a droney post-rock-influenced doom and sludge metal style to a much more experimental and industrial sound with heavy use of noise textures and influences from ambient music and power electronics. Defining features of Uboa's music are Metcalfe's vocals which regularly take the form of pained screams, her lyrics which often tackle her mental and emotional struggles and her experiences as a transgender woman, and a unique improvisation-heavy process of songwriting and production. Uboa's 2019 album The Origin Of My Depression was acclaimed in a review by The Needle Drop's Anthony Fantano which helped expose Metcalfe's music to a wider audience.
