Rob van der Loo,who is known for his bass and stick playing in prog metal band SUN CAGED,released his first solo album in 2002,an instrumental solo EP titled "Six Arms".It was extremely well received,and Rob decided to write and record a full-length album.
van der Loo wanted to make a sequel to the "Six Arms" EP but came up with a unique concept.He decided to do an album where the bass guitar was the main instrument,but instead of an instrumental album he wanted it to feature vocals,guest musicians and music that was a little more extreme.Rob decided to call this new,experimental prog metal project FREAK NEIL INC.
The album,titled "Characters",tell the story of several different characters and the frustrations they face in their daily lives.Since each character in the story is unique,Rob uses several different musical styles to reflect their personalities.
van der Loo assembled an impressive list of musicians and vocalists for the album.Among them are Arjen Anthony Lucassen,Irene Jansen,Sean Malone,Steve DiGiorgio and Marcel Coenen,along with many others.
FREAK NEIL INC. fuses together many different styles,and features excellent songwriting and musicianship.Highly recommended to not only fans of experimental prog metal,but all prog metal fans in general.
