Aabsinthe biography
AABSINTHE was formed in Saint Etienne, France, in 2001. the founding members were Pierre Arnoux (guitars / vocals), Hugo de Villoutreys (guitars), and Sylvain Navarro (drums). Romain Gayton (bass) and Romain Chacornac (keyboards) joined in 2003.

The band's music was at first melodic progressive death metal. As such, it got a good reception from the metal community. After the first shows in 2004, the outfit released their first full-length, their self-produced "The Loss of Illusions", in 2005. It was met with good reviews from the media, and after the band's contract-signing with Rupture Music, it was released to a bigger public in 2006.

2007 marks the year of AABSINTHE's second album, "In Search Of Light". The music, though still melodic progressive death metal, is more atmospheric, more emotional, darker and more complex, at times getting closer to the post-metal subgenre.

Why this artist must be listed in www.progarchives.com :

Review by MJAben

3 stars This is a dense album, quite heavy with very little to enjoy for those who don't like metal.

It is repetitive, and at times quite slow but there is a lot here to enjoy for fans of post-metal, doom-metal or straight hard death metal. The musicianship has improved significantly over what I've heard from their previous album (granted I haven't heard all of it), it is more agressive, harder and far better compositionally but on top of that it also feels much more engaging.

It's the kind of music that draws you in, over time you aren't even aware of how long you've been listening. It isn't without it's downfalls though, the first being that it is quite forgettable once the record ends, the second being the vocals, which it is possible to ignore. It is also repetitive and at times a bit grating on the ears but it is nonetheless a solid album and a vast improvement over the songs I heard from their first.

(3.25/5)
