Mare biography
MARE were a progressive metal band from Toronto, Canada, founded by singer/guitarist Tyler Semrick-Palmateer (formerly of THE END), drummer Caleb Collins (CIRCLE TAKES THE SQUARE) and bassist Rob Shortill. They released a short, self-titled EP in 2004 on Hydra Head Records before the band members decided to split up and go their separate ways in 2007.

Even with such a small amount of material, MARE made waves among all in contact with their music because of their extreme blending of styles in their music. The band plays a fervent and well-meshed concoction of doom metal and dark jazz, as well as a strong tendency to experiment with dissonance, harsh atmosphere, and choir-like hymnal structures. Angelic and celestial at times while crushing and frightening at others, MARE made a truly unique blend of music during their short lifetime.

MARE will appeal to fans of avant-garde extreme metal bands like MAUDLIN OF THE WELL, MANES, AGE OF SILENCE, DEATHSPELL OMEGA, and PORTAL, and will also find much crossover interest with bands with strong, dark atmosphere like NEUROSIS, BOHREN AND DER CLUB OF GORE, and AMENRA. It's quite a feat MARE have pulled off, leaving such a substantial impression after such a short-lived career. This is not a band to be missed.
