2 stars From the first cut, this debut reveals a band that is brutally frank in its rejection of any pretense other than a love of rock rhythms-- ugly, loud, filthy, and highly inconsiderate, Oxes are a postrock nightmare and this 2000 release was both scandalous and bold. The Baltimore trio could easily be mistaken for a punk band after a two-day crank binge and will send most progsters running for the high hills, as this first album shows repetitious patterns, mood swings, violent tendencies and predictable chaos. And no vocals at all. The music is a desperate cry for help, an ugly baby no one wants... completely alive, spontaneously resourceful and hideously interesting. There are some variations as in 'And Giraffe, Natural Enemies' with its anti-epic ambition and acoustic interlude, but this is one pissed off band who don't seem to care if you're listening or not. A strong two stars.
