FALLING INTO INFINITY

This album is a tragedy. It IS a great album. But being that it's already great, means that it could've been even better had it not been mingled with. When Dream Theater came to record this album, the record company was not what it used to be, and they decided they wanted Dream Theater to be a little more mainstream to make them more $$, I guess. As such, all the material they had written became less intricate and more mainstream. It was a hard time for Mike Portnoy, who was considering quitting.

It was originally scheduled to be a doubled disc album, with 1 disc having much of what we hear, but less messed with, and the other disc having some other stuff that they wrote, but never released, as well as a 20 minute sequel to Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper. However, they company even hired some dude named Desmond Child to rewrite the lyrics of You Not Me. The only things that were really saved from the mainstream conversion was Lines in the Sand, Trial of Tears, and New Millennium. All of which are good songs. The others are good too! But I'm just saying it could've been way better. Because that 20 minute sequel to Metropolis turned into an amazing album on its own, way better than all of Falling into Infinity. So the thing with this album is what could have been. They also have demos for this album, which I highly suggest you collect, as you can hear lots of other stuff they had.

Overall, this album is great, love the artwork (Storm Thorgerson, Obviously... even though he didn't use the band's Logo). Most people don't like this one, but it's a good one, it really is.
