Beautiful Scarlet
3 stars Jazz Rock from Canada

Track one opens with organ reminiscent of the Canterbury Scene and some Phil Miller esque guitar lines. The track keeps that feel up until the singer comes in with a blues singing which sort of changes the songs direction to that more American style. I like the instruments on this one but don't care for the vocal harmonies/singing. I think this one would be better shorter and without singing.

Track two opens with furious drumming and a riff played on keys/guitar. From here a sic sic wah supports a Jazz guitar lead that becomes a spacey section of walking bass and other instruments doing their own thing on top. The vocals then come in, veering towards Metal/Hard Rock vocals. The song then returns to a jazzy workout. This track is alright, a bit disorganized, wandering in parts and the vocals being rather eh. (This one takes the song to 3*)

Track three opens with an ambient swirling soundscape that slowly introduces the song via piano. When vocals come in they go well with the gentle keys. Eventually, the song picks up and becomes a keyboard solo over a good rhythm section. This turns into a jazz guitar interlude then a loungy vocal part. A lengthy interlude of a darker kind leads into a calmer Jazz part. Vocals eventually come back and are followed by some organ/guitar trading lead to close the track. This song is alright.

Overall this is a solid debut. The instrumentals are largely on point although the vocals are mostly delivered in a style that clashes with the music (hard rock singing with very calm jazz playing). High three stars for me.
