4 stars THE RETICENT is a music project headed by multi-instrumentalist Chris Hathcock. Concerning 'The Oubliette' he has decided to handle almost everything on his own, although he suffered from a severe injury in between. Nearly, as the album also sees a lead guitarist, some additional vocal and voice contributors, as well as a wind ensemble comprised of 54 members, yeah! Well then, who is Henry? The name was chosen for the album's protagonist as an alias, a somewhat more universal name. Conceptually seen this one is focused on Alzheimer, inspired by Hathcock's personal experiences in his family. I would say an ambitious yet authentic examination regarding this issue. Trying to reflect that disease, which evolves through seven defined stages in general. Means starting with early slight symptoms, and finally towards the total lack of physical control. Hereby the concept sees each track representing and accentuating the particular level. Musically furthermore this is implemented yet like a rollercoaster ride, while embracing the complete range of progressive metal, and even more.

Regarding the story some narration is required of course. A few speech samples are incorporated, just in order to increase the given dramaturgy. And this is where it all begins. His Name Is Henry marks a perfect entry into the album, very melodic, even includes some swinging jazzy being. Hathcock's singing voice is impressing, and I immediately was convinced with the diversified flow. Screams ultimately following a charming church organ presence, wow! Okay, it's ambivalent somehow, but I can't resist, this definitely makes curious how it ends with Stage 7. Captivated in forgetfulness, where is Henry going anyway? Musically he's almost on the melodic side of life, assured. Fascinating. This is excellently set into music, silky saxophone here, growls and screams again ... I mean it's something special that I do like an album with such an amount of harsh vocals. So much confusion, despair, fear. Where does it fit better? Released on Heaven & Hell Records 'The Oubliette' is one of the best 2020 prog metal albums I'm aware of. 4.5 stars.
