3 stars Submit to Selfdestruction is an 7" EP release by Swedish progressive black metal act Shining. The EP was originally limited to 300 hand-numbered copies but has since been released as part of the Through Years of Oppression (2004) compilation album which is easier to find. Needless to say that the original version is a rare collectors item.

The music on the 13:33 minute long two track EP is atmospheric and heavy, slow- to mid paced black metal. Endless Solitude is a slow and epic track with some haunting/ melancholic ( "I´m in severe emotional pain") raspy vocals while Submit to Self Destruction is a mid-tempo heavy track. Quite powerful that one. The atmosphere/ mood in both songs are very melancholic/ depressive and at first I actually found the vocals a bit pathetic but they´ve grown on me. The production is raw and a bit primitive but still very enjoyable and powerful. The musicianship isn´t the most sharp thing on this EP, but the focus is on atmosphere and emotion, so I can live with less tight musicianship.

Submit to Selfdestruction is a surprisingly good first release by Shining but still mostly for the fans and a 2.5 - 3 star rating is deserved.
