White, icy cold, beautiful track

"Winter" has always been one of my favourite Tori tracks. It features a glorious piano melody and her sparkling, beautiful voice. The lyrics are fairly straightforward (for her) and tug at the heart: "when you gonna love you as much as I do." It builds up dramatically towards the end with strings and echoed backing vocals. "Winter" was one of the finest moments on Amos' debut album and is even more effective when one takes in the video she made for it. Here on the maxi-single we are also treated to the ethereal experiment that is "The Pool." Icy and cold, short poetic lyrics are half-spoken/half sung over Tori's voice echoed and used as a sampled backdrop, not unlike something Bjork would entertain. Amazing and mesmerizing. "Take to the Sky" is upbeat eclectic pop with what sounds like a Peter Gabriel influence in the percussion, and some nice vocal overdubbing. Again Amos' piano is present and played with a sensuality matching her vocal. "Sweet Dreams" is pure sauciness, an exotic little shuffle with Tori backing herself with incredible harmonies. "Upside Down" is very personal in tone, mostly Tori and her piano. She has some nice slightly extended bursts of piano that are great, could use more of that! Some mellotron appears in the background for atmosphere as Tori exclaims "I found the secret to life! I'm OK when everything is not OK." I wish I could remember that in my own life! At 20 minutes the Winter five-track single is more like an EP and a very good one. Tori was incredibly prolific and these singles included material good enough to have been on the albums. Well worth seeking out for fans of her early work.
