2 stars 'Icon' - Rush (Compilation)

Just when you thought there were enough compilations from this band...

While unexpected, this career summary delivers nothing new to Rush's discography and has nothing unique going for it. As part of Universal's new line of budget releases, this gives a pretty decent overview of the sort of material that this great band has covered up to the 'Hold Your Fire' record. The compilation's saving grace is that it delivers a pretty varied catalogue of songs. Radio friendly, familiar tracks like 'Closer To The Heart' share discspace with longer, more involving pieces such as 'The Necromancer,' a track I never thought would be seen on a budget compilation.

Unless you count the uninteresting packaging, 'Icon' delivers nothing new. The music here is great, and there does seem to be some sort of effort to provide a sense of flow to the tracks. As it stands however, unless someone is completely new to this band and looking for a cheap way to get into Rush, this is better to steer clear from.
